Set the guardrails before you need them
Every UKGC-licensed casino must offer these tools in your account settings. The trick is using them in your first session, while the decision is easy:
- Deposit limit. Pick a monthly figure you'd happily spend on any other hobby, set it, forget it. Lowering it takes effect immediately; raising it forces a cooling-off wait — that asymmetry is deliberate and it protects you.
- Reality checks. A timer that interrupts play to tell you how long you've been at it. Half an hour is a sensible interval; time disappears fastest in live casino sessions.
- Time-out. A short lock on one site, from a day to six weeks. Useful after a losing streak, when the urge to "win it back" is loudest — chasing losses is how entertainment budgets become debts.
- Self-exclusion. The long-term version, and it's binding: once set, the operator must keep you out for the full period.
The signs worth acting on
None of these mean crisis on their own. Two or three together mean it's time to use the tools above, or to talk to someone:
- Spending more than the figure you'd planned, more than once.
- Gambling to recover losses rather than for fun.
- Hiding sessions or amounts from people close to you.
- Playing with money that had another job — rent, bills, borrowing.
- Feeling restless or irritable on days you don't play.
One registration that covers everything
GamStop deserves its own paragraph. It's a free national self-exclusion scheme, independent of the operators, and every casino licensed for Great Britain is required to be part of it — including all six on our comparison. Register once with your details, choose six months, one year or five, and every licensed site must turn you away for that period. It cannot be undone early, which is exactly the point.
If gambling is affecting you or someone you care about right now, don't work through this page top to bottom — just call 0808 8020 133. It's the National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare: free, confidential, open every day of the year.
